Comments: My girlfriend and I went there for dinner on a Friday evening. It was not busy when we arrived, yet we were seated in with a row of tables. Another couple was later seated beside us, six inches from our table. I could hear their conversation more clearly than my girlfriend because they were shouting over top of the crappy karaoke-style entertainer who drowned everyone out with such great classic hits as "when the moon hits your eye, it's Amore". The waiter was a pest, who was far too involved in our evening. He interrupted us with mindless blather on several occasions. He topped up our wine every time we took a sip. It was like drinking water at Mandarin. The ceasar salad was average, at best. The fried calamari and shrimp was very nice. I had the veal which was presented very well, and also tasty. My girlfriend had the special of the day, a ravioli with pesto stuffed with smoked duck. It was alright at the time, but she was almost physically ill later that night. I will never go back to the this restaurant. It might have been an off-night, or maybe this is how the management thinks fine Italian dining is supposed to be. | | Review Date: 2008-10-11 |

Comments: Our waiter Tony was extremely kind, curtious and pleasant. He seated us down within 30 seconds of our entrance and was ver polite. Very professional the way he presented our menues and his vast knowledge on wines was extra ordinary. Our food was served hot and was very delicious. I will definately be back. | | Review Date: 2008-07-07 |

Comments: Gondola gone from Alioli! Not having a good basic tomato sauce in an Italian 'ristorante' is like no gondola in Venice...it just can't be! Our waiter, Tony, personable, pleasant, fluently Italian, sat us within a minute of entry. A late Monday afternoon, early for supper, we were planning on dining slowly. Surprisingly, within an hour or so, Alioli got quite busy for the opening night of the week and the escalating noise level negated any quiet dinner chat. Reservations are a must on weekends. Service, comfortably paced throughout the whole dinner, was prompt with menu presentations and immediate with assistance when asked. Asking to be put into the chef’s hands for dinner which we hoped would mean dining on the chef’s best dishes, Tony insisted that “All our dishes are equally excellent and all our ingredients are market fresh.” Not exactly, as we learned after a little prodding, but some frozen dishes are inevitable and this is not necessarily bad. With some of our own insistence, we succeeded in convincing Tony to abide by our wish though we still had to decide on which appetizers, which pasta and which meat dish. The Alioli menu covers a varied selection: more than a dozen appetizer and salad choices, a pair of risottos, a quartet of gourmet pizzas, a dozen pastas and nearly a dozen meat, fish and poultry dishes. Prices are moderate with appetizers averaging a little less than $15, risottos,$18, pizza, $15, pastas, about $16 and the meat/fish/poultry dishes about $26. Appetizers were excellent: each well prepared, with a lovely aroma and scrumptious. One deliciously well balanced choice was a baked Portobello mushroom cap stuffed with grilled escargot, topped with melted mozzarella and slivers of parmiggiano, all resting on a bed of shredded lemon aioli dressed romaine. The other appetizer, equally good, was 6 slices of prosciutto wrapped mozzarella (The cheese wasn’t the bufala as described on the menu and by the waiter.) The little stuffed bundles had been briefly pan seared to soften the cheese and then plated with a drizzle of 20 year old balsamic vinegar. On the side, a little arugula dressed with lemon aioli again. Two delightful appetizers. Bite on the budget? Just over $25. The house wine, a Chianti, 500 ml. at $25.98, was dry, fruity and a good complement to much of the dinner. The mescalan salads dressed with balsamic vinaigrette, we set aside to accompany out main dishes ($11.98) Now our disappointment, the basic tomato sauced pasta. We were told it would be spaghetti; it was fettuccine. It was to be a bit spicy; it was, too much so. But the tomato sauce? Too spicy! Worse still, it was supplemented with bits of barely cooked tomato bits. No, no...please! The chef needs to revisit Italy. Every ristorante, trattoria or rosticceria worth its tomato paste, makes a plain, simple, sweet tomato sauce. Not piccante, not with fresh tomato bits! Then, insult to injury...told spaghetti, served fettuccine. No way! Serve what you promise...the diner sets the taste buds according to expectations ($14.95) Finally, our meat dish, Vitello Alioli: gently seared provimi veal finished with a light creamy sauce. Tender, tasty, a superb dish! Accompanied by a braised/baked medley of veggies: potatoes, carrot, squash, red pepper, asparagus, and rapini. All errors, omissions or flaws of the night were forgiven! ($20.98) This dish was excellent, without reservation. An Italian dinner should finish with a dessert, followed by an espresso. We passed on the dessert to save waist line but enjoyed mellow espressos, a regular and a ‘longo.’ ($5.76) A nice end to a nice dinner! Our over all impression? Alioli is a ‘wannabe’ ristorante that stays at the trattoria level. This is fine. Its quality of food is very good, everything prepared with a skilled hand. The service is efficient and informal but professional. Prices are fair and competitive. Portions are appropriate and satisfying for every course. Ambiance? Noise levels mean a less than intimate atmosphere but still a dining room that is attractive and accommodating. Alioli is definitely a “must re-visit” restaurant for its food and its service! We will be back. Alioli Ristorante, 350 Burnhamthorpe Rd., Mississauga (905) 281-1122 Review by The Szpinner | | Review Date: 2007-04-20 |
